Elite Awards. The theme is &#8220;Literary Ladies.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Girl I Carried<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I carried a smart girl within<br \/>\nme for nine months,<br \/>\na tiny baby, a bit more than four<br \/>\npounds. Her best friend<br \/>\nas a toddler was a stray,<br \/>\nMama Kitty,<br \/>\nAnd in the high chair she<br \/>\nloved the notes that<br \/>\nopened NPR\u2019s \u201cAll Things Considered.\u201d<br \/>\nShe flapped her arms and cooed<br \/>\nwhen the chimes heralded<br \/>\nthe evening news.<br \/>\nReader, she became an editor<br \/>\nand a musician.<br \/>\nBut was she bold?<br \/>\nOne day she came home<br \/>\nfrom West High School<br \/>\nand said, \u201cI can\u2019t get a music education<br \/>\nhere! I need to go away to school.\u201d<br \/>\nShe was fifteen.<br \/>\nAt first I said, \u201cYou\u2019re not going<br \/>\nAnywhere.\u201d But she insisted.<br \/>\nAnd so began the<br \/>\nNorth Carolina School for the Arts,<br \/>\nAnd then Northwestern.<br \/>\nShe knew what she<br \/>\nNeeded to do.<br \/>\nStrong, too.<br \/>\nShe practiced marimba<br \/>\nFor hours on end,<br \/>\nBuilding the strength<br \/>\nIn her arms<br \/>\nThat made the music.<\/p>\n<p>She drummed on snare<br \/>\nAnd bass,<br \/>\nCymbals<br \/>\nAnd congas,<br \/>\nAt a time<br \/>\nWhen girls were<br \/>\nNot supposed to<br \/>\nPlay drums.<br \/>\nLeave the rhythm<br \/>\nTo the men.<br \/>\nBe nice.<br \/>\nUm, no thanks!<br \/>\nAnd she also studied<br \/>\nJournalism,<br \/>\nWorked for Columbus Alive<br \/>\nAnd then CNN news.<br \/>\nShe corrected everyone\u2019s<br \/>\nGrammar.<br \/>\nNo mistakes on the names<br \/>\nOf world leaders.<br \/>\nThe news was clear, thanks<br \/>\nTo her. And to many women<br \/>\nLike her, like you,<br \/>\nWho stand up for their own<br \/>\nMusic and that of others,<br \/>\nWho tell the news straight,<br \/>\nGet the names right every time.<br \/>\nSo listen to the rhythm of your<br \/>\nHearts and stand up<br \/>\nFor smart women and girls<br \/>\nEverywhere. So that all of us<br \/>\nCan keep learning,<br \/>\nYoung and old.<br \/>\nBe bold enough to<br \/>\nTell the truth, speak out<\/p>\n<p>When something\u2019s wrong.<br \/>\nWe have each other\u2019s back.<br \/>\nI\u2019ll stand up for you<br \/>\nAny day, every day.<br \/>\nSisterhood is powerful.<br \/>\nNever doubt it.<br \/>\nStrong women carry<br \/>\nEach other when<br \/>\nWe need to.<br \/>\nSmart women stay in school.<br \/>\nBold women don\u2019t<br \/>\nLet their voices<br \/>\nGet stifled.<br \/>\nWhen I got pregnant,<br \/>\nAnother woman<br \/>\nTold me I would never<br \/>\nHave another carefree moment,<br \/>\nNever write<br \/>\nAnother song. She was wrong.<br \/>\nAll the love in me grew<br \/>\nAnd grew,<br \/>\nBolder. Together<br \/>\nWe are stronger!<br \/>\nSisterhood is<br \/>\nOne of the smartest,<br \/>\nBoldest<br \/>\nWords<br \/>\nWe know.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>Poem written on March 24, 2020 to reflect closures and guidelines in Knoxville during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>By Marilyn Kallet<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>State of the City: Green, Greener<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Knoxville, Tennessee<\/em><\/p>\n<p>1.<br \/>\nWe\u2019re cloistered at home<br \/>\ntoday, but our city<\/p>\n<p>blossoms around us, and<br \/>\nin us, love for home.<\/p>\n<p>Other cities may turn envy-green<br \/>\nWhen they glimpse<\/p>\n<p>Our flourishing greenscapes, our<br \/>\nmaples and sassafras, silky<\/p>\n<p>dogwoods and blousy magnolias,<br \/>\nbrazen\u00a0<em>you\u2019re-not-from-around-<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>here-are-you?<\/em>\u00a0crepe myrtle.<br \/>\nKnoxville Botanical Gardens<\/p>\n<p>Blossoms all the while<br \/>\nWe shelter. We persevere.<\/p>\n<p>Our Sunsphere, our views<br \/>\nOf the foothills don\u2019t fade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnoxville is so green!\u201d visitors say.<br \/>\nMockingbirds and bluejays agree.<\/p>\n<p>The sky has told them<br \/>\nNot to worry.<\/p>\n<p>Follow city guidelines<br \/>\nAnd you won\u2019t be winging it,<\/p>\n<p>But living long and well<br \/>\nIn our town.<\/p>\n<p>2.<br \/>\nEven when we sleep, our city grows<br \/>\nGreener, with parks and<\/p>\n<p>Wilderness trailheads flourishing.<br \/>\n\u201cKeep Knoxville Beautiful\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Is a plan, not just a dream.<br \/>\nAsk those who won the orchid<\/p>\n<p>Contest. Ask the artists<br \/>\nWho stir imaginations,<\/p>\n<p>Lend their vivid colors<br \/>\nTo the city\u2019s alleys and outdoor spaces.<\/p>\n<p>Market Square murals call our spirits<br \/>\nWith their vibrant brushstrokes.<\/p>\n<p>Dolly\u2019s face brightens a brick wall, and the<br \/>\nAugusta Avenue ensemble welcomes<\/p>\n<p>Everyone.<br \/>\nThere will be more art and<\/p>\n<p>Innovation,<br \/>\nAs time rolls on,<\/p>\n<p>Past fear.<br \/>\nFor now, we\u2019ll create<\/p>\n<p>Safely, in place,<br \/>\nMasterpieces at home,<\/p>\n<p>Or laughing stick figures<br \/>\nIn trailhead dirt.<\/p>\n<p>3.<br \/>\nGreen is the bridge<br \/>\nMayor Kincannon traversed<\/p>\n<p>With Mayor Rogero.<br \/>\nContinuity lights the way.<\/p>\n<p>The city aims<br \/>\nTo keep our community safe,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom a Distance\u201d<br \/>\nIs our chorus, our necessary theme.<\/p>\n<p>We know that Market Square will bustle,<br \/>\nBe the envy<\/p>\n<p>Of other cities again.<br \/>\nIn the mean time (mean time!)<\/p>\n<p>We stay hunkered down,<br \/>\nCautious.<\/p>\n<p>Still, neighbors are helping<br \/>\nNeighbors. Maple Street Biscuit<\/p>\n<p>Bundles emergency meals<br \/>\nFor kids and families.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re good at sheltering<br \/>\nIn good hands,<\/p>\n<p>With updated info<br \/>\nIn a well-scrubbed grasp.<\/p>\n<p>The state of our city depends<br \/>\nOn all of us<\/p>\n<p>Using our brains.<br \/>\nVirtually, if we can.<\/p>\n<p>Good minds are hard at work,<br \/>\nDistancing, online.<\/p>\n<p>Writing real letters<br \/>\nTo our loved ones again.<\/p>\n<p>4.<br \/>\nAll but vital stores<br \/>\nstay closed,<\/p>\n<p>For a time. Let\u2019s take more<br \/>\nWalks, keep six feet<\/p>\n<p>Of loving distance\u00a0 \u00a0 between us.<br \/>\nCanned beans, pickled \u2018maters,<\/p>\n<p>Grandma\u2019s recipes<br \/>\nWill see us through this.<\/p>\n<p>The state of the city is smart<br \/>\nAnd kind, at home in us.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll check on our elderly neighbors<br \/>\nBy email.<\/p>\n<p>Wave to them<br \/>\nThrough the glass.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re in this together,<br \/>\nNot singing from<\/p>\n<p>Balconies, but from trails and<br \/>\nLaptops. Germs don\u2019t know<\/p>\n<p>Who\u2019s a Big Wig or a clown.<br \/>\nSo we\u2019re staying in, wiping<\/p>\n<p>Surfaces clean.<br \/>\nLove is never having to<\/p>\n<p>Sneeze<br \/>\nNear someone else.<\/p>\n<p>Consideration and tolerance<br \/>\nAre not quarantined.<\/p>\n<p>Our beloved Phyllis Wheatley Y<br \/>\nWon\u2019t always be closed.<\/p>\n<p>Diversity is not for a day\u2013\u2013<br \/>\nIt\u2019s a race for always.<\/p>\n<p>Coda:<br \/>\nWe love you, Knoxville smart,<br \/>\nGreen.<\/p>\n<p>Our daughter Heather was born at UT Medical,<br \/>\nWent to Bearden and West High,<\/p>\n<p>Then NCSA and Northwestern.<br \/>\nWhy can\u2019t I brag?<\/p>\n<p>Didn\u2019t she get her start<br \/>\nIn Knoxville public schools?<\/p>\n<p>Heather judges the friendliness<br \/>\nOf every other city<\/p>\n<p>By Knoxville\u2019s tone. Alas,<br \/>\nmore like seasons of withered<br \/>\ngrass and wildfires,<br \/>\nseasons of flood, seasons<br \/>\nof drought.<br \/>\nWhen a 16-year-old is<br \/>\nsmarter than an elected<br \/>\nofficial, you tell me\u2013\u2013<br \/>\nwhom should I vote for?<br \/>\nAnd that \u201cOde to a Nightingale\u201d\u2013\u2013<br \/>\nwhen was the last time<br \/>\nyou lingered in melodious trill?<br \/>\nIn the age of humans,<br \/>\nin the anthropocene,<br \/>\nwe\u2019re the ones who must<br \/>\nsave our planet,<br \/>\nour children\u2019s<br \/>\nfuture, reverse the burn.<br \/>\nSunscreen alone won\u2019t do it,<br \/>\nmy friends.
